Atropine Eye Drops
Atropine eye drops have been used for many years in ophthalmology for various purposes. Low-dose formulations are being explored for their potential to manage myopia progression in children. At Eyecare Project, we offer advanced options like low-dose atropine eye drops to slow down its progression.
Studies have shown that Atropine eye drops can slow myopia progression in children by 27% to 75%, depending on the concentration.
Atropine Eye Drops
This treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals at risk of developing high myopia or pathological progressive myopia. Suitable candidates can be as young as middle primary school age and may include those with myopia and astigmatism, even at high diopter degrees.
Patient Criteria
Atropine eye drops 0.01%, 0.025% or 0.05% for myopia control have evidence for use from age 4 to 14 at the start of treatment, and for up to 2-3 years (until age 15-16).
How it works
This involves administering an eye drop nightly before sleep and adhering to a three-month review schedule.
Compounding Eye Drops
Atropine eye drops have a one-month expiry from the date of opening. These drops can be ordered and picked up in person from Eyecare Project as a three-month supply, packaged as 3 x 15 ml bottles. They must be refrigerated, even if unopened. We collaborate with a compounding pharmacist to ensure you receive tailored atropine eye drops.
Review Schedule
Atropine eye drops are used in two-year treatment blocks. It is crucial to attend all scheduled three-month review appointments to monitor any changes in refractive prescription, side effects, or ocular health.
During these reviews, your optometrist may conduct various tests, including the use of cycloplegic eye drops, OCT scans, retinal photography, and regular prescription checks to ensure minimal changes in both prescription and ocular health.
